I have another answer for why not looking directly at the trap went out the window. Egon says “I looked at the trap, Ray!” That scene could be a key to the situation. It was the first time they were using the trap when Ray gave that instruction, so they could not have known just how bright the trapping was going to be. After Egon looked at it with no effect, they would have known it wasn’t too bright.
